Uttarayan

    The kite-flying day or Uttarayan falls on 14th January every year. It is also celebrated as Makar Sankranti. Sweets made of jaggery and til are prepared on the day of Makar Sankranti. The terraces and roof tops of houses are full of kite-fliers. The young and the old fly kites throughout the day. The sky is full of colourful kites. There is a competition among some kite-fliers. They try to cut one another's kites. When a kite is cut, loud cries fill the air. Some boys run with poles in their hands. They catch hold of the cut kites and strings. The international kite-flying festival is also held in Gujarat. At night coloured lanterns are sent up with the kites. They look very attractive.
