Holi is a popular festival celebrated in India and other parts of the world, particularly in countries with significant Hindu populations. It is also known as the Festival of Colors, and it usually falls in late February or early March, on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Phalguna.

The festival is celebrated to welcome the arrival of spring and to symbolize the victory of good over evil. On this day, people come together to smear each other with colored powder and water, sing and dance to the beat of drums, and feast on traditional sweets and delicacies.

The legend behind Holi dates back to ancient Hindu mythology. It is said that the demon king, Hiranyakashipu, was granted a boon that made him invincible to humans, animals, and even gods. He became arrogant and began to torture and persecute the people of his kingdom who refused to worship him as a god.

However, his son, Prahlada, refused to follow his father's orders and remained devoted to Lord Vishnu. This enraged Hiranyakashipu, and he ordered his sister, Holika, to burn Prahlada alive. However, Lord Vishnu intervened and saved Prahlada, while Holika was burned to death.

The festival of Holi commemorates this legend and is a symbol of the victory of good over evil. It is also celebrated to mark the start of spring, a time of renewal and regeneration.

On the day of Holi, people gather to celebrate by throwing colored powder and water on each other. People smear each other's faces with bright colors, sing and dance, and enjoy festive foods and sweets. The festival is a time for people to come together, forget their differences, and celebrate as one community.

Holi is also a time for forgiveness and letting go of grudges. People apologize to each other for past mistakes and renew their relationships. The festival is a reminder of the importance of love, friendship, and community.

In recent years, the festival has become popular around the world, and many non-Hindus participate in the celebrations. It has become a symbol of cultural diversity and a celebration of unity and friendship.

In conclusion, Holi is a vibrant and colorful festival that celebrates the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil. It is a time for people to come together, celebrate, and renew their relationships with loved ones. The festival is a reminder of the importance of forgiveness, friendship, and community, and it is a celebration of diversity and unity.

Essay 2

From ancient times, man has loved functions and festivals, They give relief to men from irksomeness of his daily life. Holi has an important place among all the important functions and festivals that Hindu society celebrates. This function is celebrated on the full moon day of Falgun (Hindi month) every year. One month before the festival the songs of Holi can be heard at different places.

There is a story in Puranas that on this day Holika, the father's sister (Bua) of Prahlad, on the order of her brother, sat into fire with Prahlad in her lap. But God's grace Prahlad escaped and Holika was burnt to ashes. Since then this festival is celebrated every year.

This festival starts on the day of 'Basant Panchami' of Magh (Hindi month) before Falgun (Hindi month) starts. On the day of Basant Panchami, the children start gathering fuel, fire-wood, cakes of cow dung, etc. At the holy time of Holi, some important person of the area set fire to Holi. Persons parch barley ears and distribute them among their friends and relations.

On the next morning, there is an atmosphere of wantonness everywhere. Boys, youths and old persons come out of their houses with red powder (gulal) and colours. They throw colours upon one another, rub red powder (gulal) upon the faces of each other and embrace each other with love and affection. The Holi of Brij is very famous.

On this festival, many people drink wine, hemp (bhang), etc. They lose their senses and throw dirt and mud upon each other. The festival of Holi is a festival of joy and love. We should celebrate it in the same manner. We should remove the ills that had crept in.
