The new Constitution of free India was adopted on 26th January 1950. Thus, India became a Republic on that day. So we celebrate it as our Republic Day. It is our national festival. It is a public holiday. Republic Day is celebrated with great joy and fervour. The President unfurls the national flag in Delhi. After the national anthem, there is a march-past by the armed forces. There is a long procession of floats from different states. School children present a variety of drills and dances. Thousands of people gather to see the Republic Day parade in Delhi. We see it on TV. The national flag flutters atop all government offices and other buildings. Republic Day is also celebrated in schools and colleges. All important buildings are illuminated at night. People burst crackers to celebrate Republic Day.
