Diwali

Diwali is the biggest festival of the Hindus. It comes in October or November. Diwali is a festival of lights. People clean and decorate their houses before Diwali. They buy new clothes. They also send greeting cards to their friends and relatives. On the day of Diwali, women draw colourful rangolis. Special sweets are prepared on that day. The doors are decorated with festoons made of marigold flowers and leaves of the Ashoka tree. At night there are rows of earthen lamps in every house. Children burst crackers. Businessmen perform chopda poojan. The New Year is celebrated the next day with joy. People get up early and go to the temple. They visit their friends and relatives. They wish one another a Happy New Year.


Holi

Holi comes in the month of March. It is a colourful festival of the Hindus. It is celebrated with great joy all over the country. This festival is celebrated in honour of Prahlad's victory over Holika. It is the victory of good over evil. On the day of Holi, a big fire is lighted in the evening. People Worship the Holi fire with flowers and coconuts. Some people observe a fast on that day. They break their fast only after worshipping the Holi fire. The day after Holi is celebrated as Dhuleti. It is a festival of colours. People play with colours on that day. People sprinkle gulal or coloured water on one another. They dance and sing to the beat of drums. People have a lot of fun on that day.

Christmas

Christmas is the biggest and the most important festival of the Christians. It falls on 25th December every year. People celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on that day. People clean and decorate their houses. Special sweets and cakes are made for Christmas. People buy new clothes. They send greeting cards to their relatives and friends. The Christmas tree is decorated with colourful lights and balloons. Every house has a Christmas Star. On the eve of Christmas, the Christians go to church to pray. Small children hang their stockings at the foot of the bed. They get gifts from Santa Claus. On 25th, the people wish one another a Merry Christmas. January 1st is celebrated as the New Year Day. People wish one another a Happy New Year.
